What is Thangka?
A thangka, also known as tangka, thanka, or tanka, is a painting on cotton or silk applique, typically depicting a Buddhist deity, scene, or mandala. Unlike flat paintings like oil or acrylic ones, thangkas are more complex in nature. Generally, thangkas last a long time and retain much of their luster, but due to their delicate nature, they need to be kept in dry places to maintain their quality. Thangkas serve as important teaching tools, depicting the life of the Buddha, influential lamas, deities, and bodhisattvas.
When created properly, thangkas serve several functions. Images of deities are used as teaching tools to depict the life of the Buddha, important historical events related to prominent lamas, or myths associated with other deities. Devotional images also act as centerpieces during rituals or ceremonies and are often used as mediums through which prayers or requests are made.
